Every year right about now we round up our blogging activity across Google. Ready? Here goes.

This is our 368th post of the year on the main Google blog, which is 23% more than in 2007. In addition to more posts, we are thrilled to know that we have many more readers now — 78% more, to be exact. The number of unique visitors jumped from 6,738,830 last year to more than 12 million (12,000,723) in 2008. And readers are coming from all over: the UK, Canada, India, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Japan and beyond. The top non-Google referrers are Yahoo, Digg, Reddit, Lifehacker and Slashdot.

We posted quite a bit about new products (10) and new product features (56), but nothing caused as much excitement as our earlier-than-planned unveiling of Google Chrome. This post alone had 1,735,093 unique visitors and generated 12% of our total-year pageviews on the blog! There was also the much-anticipated announcement of the first Android-powered phone. And people enjoyed reading about our design philosophies. Who knew a little change to a favicon would generate such interest?

But it wasn't all just product news; there was much else to cover in 2008. To mark Google's 10th birthday, we took a moment to reflect on the enormous impact the Internet has had on people's lives since our founding. Google, Yahoo Search Ad Deal Delayed

In a couple of weeks, the heavily-criticized search ad partnership between Google and Yahoo are supposed to materialize. But perhaps not wanting to face further issues, the two search giants decided to wait for the Justice Department to finish their study first.

According to a Yahoo spokesman, the deal was delayed a bit to pursue their ongoing discussion with the Justice Department, awaiting further questions from the regulating bodies relating to the specifics of the search ad deal. Although Yahoo might be affected by the delay, the company has no choice but to wait for the regulators’ decisionto avoid possible scrutiny and perhaps legal sanction later on.

The decision to delay the implementation of the search ad deal which was supposed to be implemented mid-October comes off the heels of a legislator urging the Justice Department not to interfere with the implementation of the deal. A few days ago, US Attorney Michael Mukasey wrote a letter addressed to the DOJ warning that barring the deal from materializing would stiffle Internet market growth and innovation.

Should the Justice Department ruled out against the search ad deal, will Google and Yahoo push through with the deal and defy legal impediments? BoomTown’s Kara Fisher speculates that Yahoo and Google might tweak the specifics of the deal to appease the regulators or totally abandon the deal.

Last week, when I discussed PPC bidding strategies, I promised to start a discussion about how and when to make decisions about your PPC campaign's keyword and ad performance.

But first, it's worthwhile to emphasize an important point: almost every action you take to improve your PPC ad campaign should be based on conversion data.

Many PPC newbies neglect to set up conversions tracking, and base their assumptions about campaign performance on the number of impressions and clicks, on ad position, and on CTR.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Those metrics are useful to gauge a campaign's ability to drive traffic to your site -- and especially the ability for a particular ad to attract clicks. But they tell nothing about your campaign's ability to drive sales or leads.

Tracking and reporting on conversion data, and fine-tuning a PPC campaign's performance based on that, sets PPC advertising apart from other advertising channels that have no such built-in abilities.

Here's how you should view the most important metrics regarding your campaigns:

The number of impressions indicates how often your ad is displayed, and is a measure of the number and effectiveness of the keywords in your campaign.

The number of clicks and the CTR indicates how well your ad is working to convince those viewing the ad that your site/offer corresponds well to the intent of their search.

The number of conversions and the conversion rate indicates how well your keywords, ads and landing pages are working together to convince PPC-driven site visitors to take the action that is the objective of your site -- usually sales or leads.

Since conversion data is necessary for you to judge how well your PPC campaign is working -- to decide whether you've chosen the right keywords, written compelling ad copy, adjusted your bids to obtain maximum ROI, and designed your landing pages correctly -- it's essential that you set up your site with conversion tracking.

Doing so is a one-time operation that's simple, fast and free -- you simply paste a chunk of JavaScript code into a "Thank You" page on your site. That's the page that site visitors see just after taking the desired action -- immediately after finishing a purchase, or submitting a lead form.

Second side note: be sure to test conversion tracking after setting it up -- and test it periodically to make sure it's still working. Though the setup is straightforward, tiny mistakes, like leaving off a JavaScript line or punctuation mark, can render tracking inoperable. And pay close attention to whether your Thank You page is a secure one (with a URL prefixed by https://) -- if so, a different version of the conversion code must be used.

Third side note: many PPC advertisers need to know and report data that is difficult or impossible to obtain via the conversion tracking described above. For example, for many eCommerce advertisers, knowing the number of conversions (sales transactions) is insufficient; they need to know the exact revenue from each conversion in order to determine their PPC campaign's effectiveness (profitability).

Fortunately doing so is straightforward -- measuring exact revenue is the forte of most web site analytics packages. One fine example is free: Google Analytics. Flash and SEO: Like Oil and Water

We often deal with clients that are planning to "revamp" their sites with Flash, with SEO having already generated tremendous gains in their sales. The thing that we most dread to hear is that they've hired an experienced "Flash designer" that will be taking their websites to the "next level." Unfortunately, that "next level" is often the basement - at least in terms of SEO results.

The bottom line here is that a site built entirely in Flash still faces huge obstacles. While there have been recent moves from Google and Yahoo! to try to index the content from combined Flash/SEO sites, those moves have not yet, from my experience, translated into SEO results or success (at least when compared to html sites).

We should make a distinction here between embedded Flash and sites built entirely from Flash. For example, a site that contains Flash elements but still contains basic html elements will not overly suffer, as the Flash element (usually a movie in a box on the homepage or elsewhere) is externalized. A search engine spider will generally not try to parse through any files that have been externalized in the code - they will only index the code that is readily apparent on the source page.

However, from an SEO results perspective, there are still major issues with sites that are built entirely in Flash, and SEO is normally the first thing that suffers. First of all, the URL generally never changes no matter where people navigate on the site. As any decent SEO practitioner will tell you, every page of your site is a potential entry page for a search engine. With a site built in Flash, SEO suffers even more as you only have one potential entry page, which is the main URL. This cuts off dozens, hundreds, or thousands of potential pages that could otherwise be indexed in Google and Yahoo! (and all other engines). When your only potential entry page in the search engine listings is your home page, it is very difficult to target a wide assortment of keyphrases, potentially eliminating SEO results or rankings.

Content is another very large issue. Search engines rank pages based upon a number of criteria, but one of the most important to SEO results is the text that they can "understand" on individual pages. At present, search engines read primarily html text (although some also read text in the PDF format) - which means that if you decide that you want to use a rare and fancy font that must be displayed in graphic form (since the visitor may not have that particular font available on his or her computer while browsing), the engine will not read the text and therefore will not know what the page is about, which could harm SEO results. Naturally, this also includes any of the text included in Flash. While Yahoo! and Google have recently announced enhanced capabilities in reading content within Flash, I have not personally seen that translate into great SEO results for competitive keyphrases.

One other emerging aspect is that as search evolves, more and more people are looking for information while they are away from their computers. Many mobile devices are currently incapable of displaying Flash content, although recent moves by Adobe to make "Flash Lite" available may change this. However, it remains to be seen whether people that are seeking information on a mobile device will even want to navigate through Flash, especially if they can get the information that they seek from a fast-loading html page. In my opinion, lean html content will be at a premium when a company is trying to target a mobile audience.

Despite the difficulties, it is not the intent of this article to assert that Flash and SEO will always be incompatible - merely that it is the state of the current situation. You can find many differing opinions on mixing Flash and SEO on the internet, but the true test is to try to find a Flash site (that is to say, a site built entirely in Flash) that you admire and see if it ranks well in SEO results for 50+ competitive terms that are related to the specific business (in Google or Yahoo!). In my experience, such sites that combine Flash and SEO are nearly impossible to find. If anyone out there knows of one, please let me know.

Flash can be, and often is, used for great effect on the internet, in interactive kiosks, and in many other applications. I'm not from the "any Flash is bad" school, although I do think that many Flash practitioners tend to get a little carried away and often ignore basic usability issues. However, sites built entirely in Flash with SEO elements are still, again in my opinion, like oil and water - Flash and SEO are obviously individually useful, but they don't mix well. Until they do, I will continue to advise my clients not to build sites entirely out of Flash - or, at the very least, to have an alternate html option for search engine and user preference purposes. At the end of the day, many clients are surprised to find out how many visitors actually prefer "old school" html.

For the uninitiated, it’s a trying experience! Below is a rough phase by phase description.

Phase 1 – Birth

You start off with definite ideas. As you explain them, they become vague. As others repeat your explanation to demonstrate how well they’ve grasped your idea, the idea begins to sound dull and unimaginative. You outwardly congratulate them on their immense understanding. Inwardly you cringe at having come up with such an awful idea, but realise it’s too late to change your mind as so many knowledgeable pleople have emraced it and are running out of the room in their eagnerness to get back to their Mac’s to develop it.

Phase 2 – Waiting

Sleepless nights follow; arguments with loved ones; lack of concentration at work. Finally the first images arrive. Your hand grabs the mouse and clicks of its own volition while inwardly you fight the urge to run and be sick......

Phase 3 – Revelation (Positive)

Then it appears. Out of the little icon, grows a beautiful image. Pride mingled with delight

Phase 4 – Revealtion (Negative)

Then the rest of the team get involved. You want to scream at them. They wear a tie like that, their hair is appalling, and they are commenting negatively about YOUR logo? Cheek of some people. Although. Now that you look at it again, that colour isn’t exactly what you had in mind, it more of a turquoise, you had imagined petrol blue. And the size is ALL wrong.

The merry dance has begun. They’re right. No, no, they didn’t want to change your mind, they were merely pointing out something. We’ll send it back with comments and get more samples.

We've received numerous requests to improve our indexing of Adobe Flash files. Today, Ron Adler and Janis Stipins—software engineers on our indexing team—will provide us with more in-depth information about our recent announcement that we've greatly improved our ability to index Flash.

Q: Which Flash files can Google better index now?
We've improved our ability to index textual content in SWF files of all kinds. This includes Flash "gadgets" such as buttons or menus, self-contained Flash websites, and everything in between.

Q: What content can Google better index from these Flash files?
All of the text that users can see as they interact with your Flash file. If your website contains Flash, the textual content in your Flash files can be used when Google generates a snippet for your website. Also, the words that appear in your Flash files can be used to match query terms in Google searches.

In addition to finding and indexing the textual content in Flash files, we're also discovering URLs that appear in Flash files, and feeding them into our crawling pipeline—just like we do with URLs that appear in non-Flash webpages. For example, if your Flash application contains links to pages inside your website, Google may now be better able to discover and crawl more of your website.

Q: What about non-textual content, such as images?
At present, we are only discovering and indexing textual content in Flash files. If your Flash files only include images, we will not recognize or index any text that may appear in those images. Similarly, we do not generate any anchor text for Flash buttons which target some URL, but which have no associated text.

Also note that we do not index FLV files, such as the videos that play on YouTube, because these files contain no text elements.

Q: How does Google "see" the contents of a Flash file?
We've developed an algorithm that explores Flash files in the same way that a person would, by clicking buttons, entering input, and so on. Our algorithm remembers all of the text that it encounters along the way, and that content is then available to be indexed. We can't tell you all of the proprietary details, but we can tell you that the algorithm's effectiveness was improved by utilizing Adobe's new Searchable SWF library.

Q: What do I need to do to get Google to index the text in my Flash files?
Basically, you don't need to do anything. The improvements that we have made do not require any special action on the part of web designers or webmasters. If you have Flash content on your website, we will automatically begin to index it, up to the limits of our current technical ability (see next question).

That said, you should be aware that Google is now able to see the text that appears to visitors of your website. If you prefer Google to ignore your less informative content, such as a "copyright" or "loading" message, consider replacing the text within an image, which will make it effectively invisible to us.

Q: What are the current technical limitations of Google's ability to index Flash?
There are three main limitations at present, and we are already working on resolving them:

1. Googlebot does not execute some types of JavaScript. So if your web page loads a Flash file via JavaScript, Google may not be aware of that Flash file, in which case it will not be indexed.
2. We currently do not attach content from external resources that are loaded by your Flash files. If your Flash file loads an HTML file, an XML file, another SWF file, etc., Google will separately index that resource, but it will not yet be considered to be part of the content in your Flash file.
3. While we are able to index Flash in almost all of the languages found on the web, currently there are difficulties with Flash content written in bidirectional languages. Until this is fixed, we will be unable to index Hebrew language or Arabic language content from Flash files.

We're already making progress on these issues, so stay tuned!

@andrew, jonny m, erichazann, mike, ledge, stu, rex, blog, dis: For our July 1st launch, we didn't enable Flash indexing for Flash files embedded via SWFObject. We're now rolling out an update that enables support for common JavaScript techniques for embedding Flash, including SWFObject and SWFObject2.

@mike: At this time, content loaded dynamically from resource files is not indexed. We’ve noted this feature request from several webmasters -- look for this in a near future update.

Interaction of HTML pages and Flash

@captain cuisine: The text found in Flash files is treated similarly to text found in other files, such as HTML, PDFs, etc. If the Flash file is embedded in HTML (as many of the Flash files we find are), its content is associated with the parent URL and indexed as single entity.

@jeroen: Serving the same content in Flash and an alternate HTML version could cause us to find duplicate content. This won't cause a penalty -- we don’t lower a site in ranking because of duplicate content. Be aware, though, that search results will most likely only show one version, not both.

@All: We’re trying to serve users the most relevant results possible regardless of the file type. This means that standalone Flash, HTML with embedded Flash, HTML only, PDFs, etc., can all have the potential to be returned in search results.

Indexing large Flash files

@dsfdgsg: We’ve heard requests for deep linking (linking to specific content inside file) not just for Flash results, but also for other large documents and presentations. In the case of Flash, the ability to deep link will require additional functionality in Flash with which we integrate.

@All: The majority of the existing Flash files on the web are fine in regard to filesize. It shouldn’t be too much of a concern.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) should be at the top of your Web publishing priority list. If Web surfers can't find your site, they can't read it, use it or share it with others.

One might think SEO is an arcane science that only a few experts have mastered. There is quite a bit to it, and there are times you might want to employ an SEO firm or expert to help you optimize your site. Often this is a costly solution that's not feasible for individuals or small businesses.

Lead with good content.

My number one tip for SEO? Provide frequently updated content that people want to read. Incoming links are key and if you can provide content that people will read and get something out of, there is a good chance they will link to that content.

Research your keywords.

You can use a Keyword Suggestion Tool or simply put yourself in the mindset of your target audience. Learn which terms people will search with and get those into your content and meta information.

Provide a good, clear title.

If SEO is important to you make sure you don't get cute with the titles for your pages. Write titles that are clear and contain your keywords. Once you've got that title written, make sure it appears in your title tag as well as in your top level heading tags (h1) on your pages.

Don't use splash pages or Flash.

Search engines like text. A Flash or image intro can block an engine's crawler right at your homepage. If you do use images, be sure to add keyword laden descriptions to your alt attributes.

Use Robots.txt

Make sure you provide a robots.txt file that will help tell crawlers what to index on your site. There are quite a few neat things you can do with your robots.txt file, so you might want to read up on them.

Code your pages with standard, clean and semantic markup.

The cleaner your code the easier it is to crawl. Use markup as it is intended with the proper tags tied to the proper information. For example, place your headings with in heading tags, paragraphs within paragraph tags, etc. Another good idea is to move all your presentation into a CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) file. This makes your code lighter, faster and easier to index.

Don't get tricky!

Whatever you do, don't try to "trick" your way into more traffic. Duplicate pages, hidden links and other less-than-honest techniques can get you seriously penalized and ruin any positive work you've done.

Be patient and don't forget the people!

Search engines are constantly updating and re-indexing. It may take awhile after you've made some changes to see the results. Hang in there, keep working on your content and keep providing something that people find useful.

It's easy to forget that the reason you want to optimize for search in the first place is that you want to bring people to your site and your content!

This question just got asked of me today at one of the forums where I hang out and offer my advice. It's a question that I get asked a lot. For some reason, I don't believe I've ever put my thoughts down in article form before. So for those of you who haven't had the pleasure of getting the straight scoop on affiliate programs, this article might just be one that you'll want to read. It's a little controversial, as not everybody agrees with this, but it's based on over five years of experience as an affiliate marketer.

So let me get the answer to the question out of the way right here. No, there is NO best affiliate program. It doesn't exist. A program is only as good as YOU make it. In other words, if you don't know how to promote something, it doesn't matter what it is. Heck, pure junk can be sold if promoted the right way. Think I'm kidding? Then obviously you haven't heard of the Pet Rock and Google Ads For Free. Both of those products had absolutely NO real value to them, but they had great promotional campaigns.

Having said that, to give yourself the best chance of making a sale with the program or product you're selling, you want to find one that has a good reputation, either through the product itself or through the creator. Some people have such great reputations that they could sell just about anything. That's not to say that they'd create something that's garbage. If they did, they wouldn't have a great reputation. So that's the first thing you want to look for...somebody who people rave about.

The next thing you want to look for is a product or program that pays well. It doesn't make sense to promote something that only pays you a few dollars. Forget about ad costs. Your time is worth something too. And if I'm going to promote something by writing a ton of articles for it and putting up a blog or whatever, then I want to know that I'm going to get a decent return on my investment. So I look for products that come with a pretty hefty price tag, unless it's something I've created myself. That's the only exception. I also want to make sure that the product converts well. I want the highest return for the least amount of work.

Affiliate marketing is not easy because most people go about it all wrong. In my signature you'll find a book that will turn you into an affiliate marketing expert. I am almost 100% sure of that.

Google To Acquire GrandCentral

Google is in acquisition discussions with telephone management startup GrandCentral, we’ve learned, and we have a high degree of confidence that the deal has actually been closed. We are trying to nail down the acquisition price. Just last week I flagged this company as the most exciting startup we’re currently tracking.

The basic idea around GrandCentral is “one phone number for all your phones, for life.” As we change jobs, homes and cell phones, there are a lot of phone numbers to keep track of, and keeping everyone up to date with your most recent phone numbers is a real cost. If you use GrandCentral you can give out a single phone number. What happens when that person calls that number depends on his/her relationship to you, and what you are doing at the time.

The company, which has raised less than $6 million in capital from Minor Ventures (the exact amount has never been disclosed), beta launched just last September. Earlier this year mainstream press and blogger attention heated up.

The company may have received too much press attention before the product was ready, and we reported on some backlash from beta users abandoning the service in March. Still, the company pushed ahead, launching a mobile product and other features.

GrandCentral was recently pitching a second round of financing to Silicon Valley venture capitalists, but broke off discussions abruptly as the Google talks heated up.

I’m speculating on where Google will use GrandCentral, but the synergies with Gmail and GTalk are fairly obvious and could be the next step in Google’s competition with Skype and other instant messaging platforms.

This is, in my opinion, a great move by Google. Grand Central is an awesome productivity and simplifies the lives of users with multiple phones by giving them a single phone number and letting them handle calls via rules. It’s a natural fit with GTalk and Gmail.

Google won’t comment on this story. I have an email in to GrandCentral to see if they’ll confirm.

Gmail Gets Its Own Labs

I guess that many of you are familiar with Google Labs, the website where the search giant offers demos of its projects that aren’t ready for prime time. Google Labs serves also as a testing grounds and a a way for the company to gather feedbacks form the users.

Starting today, Google decided that Gmail should have its own Labs. As Keith Coleman, Product Manager, explained on Gmail official blog, Gmail Labs will present the most interesting ideas from Google’s software engineers.

“People often ask how we decide what to build next. It's usually a mix of factors, like how many users are asking for it (think delete button, vacation responder, and IMAP, among others), how useful we think it will be (think chat, conversation view, etc.) or how much fun it will be to work on (this is actually really important). We have all sorts of debates about each option, we weigh the pros and cons, and then some of the time we probably make the wrong decision,” Coleman wrote

With Gmail Labs, the users could catch a glimpse of some features and decide if they like them or not. The new service is introduced as new tab in the Settings menu of Gmail. For the moment it will be available only for the English users.

Gmail Labs includes alreadt 13 new features such as Quick Links, which lets you save searches and any other views in Gmail, Superstars, which gives you different types of stars and even a game, Old Snakey.

The cod behind those new features have been test only at a basic level, so Coleman offered and escape hatch.

Google has already released some time ago Google Talk, Labs Edition, an experimental release of the Google Talk client. It has many of the same great features as the Google Talk Gadget, including instant messaging, emoticons, and group chat. IDC Report: The Future Is About Online Advertising

We may well call this the “Internet advertising” era, if we look at IDC’s latest report on the U.S. market: online advertising is expected to double from $25.5 billion last year to $51.1 billion in 2012, the market research firm predicted on Friday.

Within the next four years, online advertising is expected to become second after direct advertising, from the fifth place it occupies today. According to IDC, the online video advertising will also increase in popularity in the United States.

Furthermore, the revenue from video advertising is expected to grow sevenfold from $500 million now to $3.8 billion within four years. We are now looking at a tendency to shift from cable TV and broadcast television classic advertising to online video advertising, IDC says.

And it’s all because of the consumers, Kirsten Weide, program director for IDC’s digital media and entertainment unit explained: consumers have begun to realize that as opposed to the TV, internet video allows them to watch what they want, when they want, how many times they want.

The forecast for the United States shows a significant growth in online advertising revenue, despite more pessimistic reports that showed stagnation over the past two years in this business.

Earlier this month, an Interactive Advertising Bureau report for the United States unveiled that search advertising accounted for 41 percent of the overall online spending last year, up 1 percent from 2006.

Search advertising appears to keep the secret to online advertising, remaining the dominating form on the market, and led by Google with 70 percent.

Google finally pushes the PR Export!

After so many months of speculations on Google PR updates and the doubts that Google will discontinue the PR export in order to fight link sales, today we’ve finally saw the change in the green bar on all websites. Thank you G.

Today’s Google PR Export or Update (its not actually update because Google updates it dynamically every day but only exports the results in few month or sometimes a bit more) was as always one really interesting event. The one of the things that we can quickly realize is that all web directories are will lower page rank than before, but unique content websites are with a bit low amount of links scored higher pagerank than others. This most probably means that the duplicate content algo is somehow modified to capture much more spam than ever before (which is something rather expected)

Also another really interesting and also expected outcome was that due to the progressive expanding of the web, all page rank values require more and more links to be achieved. Now for pr 3 you need more than 2.5k link popularity, pr 4 more than 5 to 20k links and pr 6 > 150k. Note that this is LINK POPULARITY not links only which is relatively the number of actual links since most search engines don’t show the real value.

Test Your High Value Pages

Trying to optimize a large website for conversion can be a daunting task if you don't have a plan. The most important pages to test are those that have the biggest impact on your site's success. By using Google Analytics and Google Website Optimizer together, you can identify these high value pages and set up experiments that will eliminate the guesswork from their design.

Your high value landing pages

In his talk on the Web Analytics panel at SES, Avinash Kaushik recounted his experience searching for a new faucet. The top paid ad took him to a page focused on sinks rather than faucets; he was immediately turned off and bounced from the site.

What's the lesson here? Landing pages are key pages to optimize because they are your visitors' first (and often last) impression of your website. If a visitor lands on a page that doesn't provide the information she's looking for, she'll probably leave without clicking any further. For high-traffic landing pages, this can add up to a lot of lost visitors.

That's why it's so important to find, and fix, high-traffic landing pages that lose a high percentage of visitors. Look at the "Top Landing Pages" report within the Content section of Google Analytics. Pages that have both a high Bounce Rate (the percentage of visits that resulted in the visitor immediately leaving the site) and large number of Entrances need to be redesigned.

The Google Analytics Landing Pages report (Content Section) shows a list of top landing pages ordered by the number of entrances on the left. On the right, the Bounce Rate compared to site average is graphically displayed. Pages with a high number of Entrances and a high Bounce Rate (red bar), are good candidates for optimization.

Don't forget about funnel pages

Other high value pages are those that lead visitors to your goal pages. Visitors reach a goal page once they have have made a purchase or completed another desired action, such as a registration or download. In Google Analytics, you can specify up to ten pages in a defined funnel representing the path that you expect visitors to take on their way to the goal page (conversion!). A page that is part of a goal funnel is another great place to focus website optimization efforts.

The "Funnel Visualization" report within the Goals section of Google Analytics shows you how many visitors exit the funnel at each step in the path towards the goal page. In the funnel visualization below, you can see that most visitors in this funnel are lost in the transition from the "View Shopping Cart" step to the "Login" step. Only 7% of visitors move past this step, but of those who do, many go on to make a complete an order! Limiting steps in paths to a goal, like the "View Shopping Cart" step below, is another great place to begin your website optimization experiments.

The Google Analytics Funnel Visualization report (Goals Section) shows the pages where visitors abandon a goal path. Pages that lose a high percentage of traffic on the path towards a website goal are good candidates for optimization.

You know which pages to test...

A little competition can get your team excited about content experimentation. Try asking a couple of your co-workers and perhaps your boss for suggestions on alternate variations of a high value page. Label each of the suggested variations in Website Optimizer with the contributor's name. Then, ask another set of co-workers to predict which variation will emerge victorious. You can monitor the progress each day to see how everyone's suggestions and predictions are stacking up. Keep in mind that it usually takes at least one or two weeks for the definitive winner to emerge. Once Website Optimizer has determined the winning page, you'll not only have a better performing page, but if you're lucky, you'll have bragging rights in your office.

Demographics now available in YouTube Insight

When we first announced YouTube Insight, our free video analytics tool for YouTube, we were excited to see just how users, partners, and advertisers might creatively use information about the viewing trends of their videos. We've since learned that some users and partners are modifying their upload schedules based on when they know their audience is tuning in, and advertisers are studying geographic traffic patterns to assess the effectiveness of regional ad campaigns.

Today we've added some new features to Insight. One is a new demographics tab that displays view count information broken down by age group (such as ages 18-24), gender, or a combination of the two, to help you get a better understanding of the makeup of your YouTube audience. We show you general information about your viewers in anonymous and aggregate form, based on the birth date and gender information that users share with us when they create YouTube accounts. This means that individual users can't be personally identified.

Insight now also displays statistics based on the combined total views of all the videos you've uploaded. Just as you can explore the view counts and popularity of individual videos, with this feature you can see your account's total number of views, and your relative popularity on YouTube compared to other users, based on geographic location.

As with Insight's other features, we hope this new information helps you learn how to create more compelling content that best engages the audiences you want to reach. You can find these new metrics under the "Demographics" tab within the Insight dashboard.

Get more traffics from Stumbleupon

I know many of you have registered with Stumbleupon. I also already have the account. You can see my Stumbleupon page at http://cypherhackz.stumbleupon.com. I am not a good stumbler but I use Stumbleupon just to find interesting websites which have been stumbled by other Stumbleupon members.

But do you know how many traffic you will get if your post got stumbled by someone? One of my post was once stumbled and the traffics I got was very extremely high. Over 5000 hits I received on that day. It was the first time I got 5000 traffics just in one day.

How to get stumbled?

Good content. Yes, that is the answer for that simple question. Write a good content and your post might get stumbled by someone who likes your post.

But how good is a good content is? It is depend on the way the reader see your writing. Some might look your writing is dull and not interesting but some might think that your post is very helpful. Very informative and energetic. Therefore, you need to write something that is far way better and unique than the others.

Is there is another way to get stumbled?

Yes, it is. You can stumble your own post if you want but here is another way to do it. When you joined into Stumbleupon community, you can invite others to be your friends. At the time I writing this article, I only have 42 friends in my list (Hope I will get more friends after this). But some of my Stumbleupon friends have more than hundreds. Maybe they are popular and that is why they have many friends. But why do we need friends in Stumbleupon? Why do we need many friends?

Other than building a blogger network, you can send the post that you want to get stumbled to them. It can be done via Stumbleupon toolbar. JohnTP has wrote about it in his article, Increase Web Traffic using Stumbleupon. For me, it is likely spamming others but it will help you getting more stumbles and traffics to your website when your friends stumble it.

Although I did it twice but I don’t think what I did was the right thing. I misuse the Stumbleupon toolbar. It is like begging someone to stumble your post so you will get high traffics. The “Send to” function is use for sharing quality and interesting website with others and not to show your post to your friends and ask them to stumble and get high traffics from it. That is totally wrong.

So, which one is the best way?

Just write your post as usual. Make a valuable post. Make it interesting and not too dull with words. Put your emotions when you type. People will stumble your post if they see the value it contains. Keep in mind that, although your website is not popular, your writing is suck like me, but one day, people will recognise you. People will know who you are, what your website is about and how interesting your website is.

As time goes by, you will learn a lot of these things. You will know that write a good content is the best way to get traffics. For me, the traditional way is always the best. After all, I wish you good luck in blogging. Hope you will get the high traffics you want.

Is it true lack of posting will decrease our website traffics? Some people say that they need to update their website everyday so the traffics will steady. Well, I can say it is 50% right and 50% it is wrong. Why?

It is true that your traffics will decrease if you don’t update your website. But this only applies to a new website. New website does not has many contents and only some of the contents win the top rank in Search Engine Result Page (SERP). Or maybe completely lost from the competition. If your website is new and you are so lazy to update your website, you need to focus on Search Engine Optimization (SEO). You need to do a lot of research, implement what you found, and see how it is perform.

And it is wrong if your website is popular and well known by all people around the World (or at least people who looking for something in search engines). Some popular websites does not has new update for about a week or so but the traffics they got are stable. And even sometimes they get higher traffics. This is because many of the traffics coming from the search engines and from referral links. They have many contents and the website gets popular because of they win the keyword competition. Let say if someone search for “the grabber” a tool to download Rapidshare files (Rapidshare has changed the code so it does not work anymore), what do you expect from the result? See and find out yourself.

The main point that I want to share here is you need to know SEO. Learn it and implement it on your website. It is some sort of a little bit confusing at the first place but after you do a lot of reading, experiments, and it will be easier later on.

This is just my opinion. I am not an expert in driving traffics or SEO but I have some experiences and do observations among websites.

Google News now available on your iPhone and iPod Touch

As we sat in our offices in Trondheim staring off at the fjord -- we're Norwegians, that's what we do -- a thought occurred to us: wouldn't it be nice to make Google News accessible to readers on their iPod Touch or iPhone? The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, we're happy to announce that Google News is now available to iPhone and iPod Touch users in over 30 countries. This means that you'll see a full-fledged version of Google News on these devices, improved Google News results and, where available, relevant YouTube videos embedded with news stories.

Yahoo To Rewire for Social Network with Open Strategy

Yahoo plans to rewire itself to bring a latent social network to the surface using an Open Strategy announced at the Web 2.0 conference. Yahoo said an app written for one Yahoo property will be able to integrate with other properties and with the extended social network. Yahoo already supports the OpenSocial standards for sharing with other sites.

Yahoo may resemble islands of Web properties, but the company is launching a renovation that could turn it into one huge platform. On Thursday, Yahoo announced its Open Strategy at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco.

"Imagine a world where you can write code that will meaningfully reach millions of users in a single bound," wrote Yahoo's Neal Sample on the company's Yodel Anecdotal blog.

'Latent Social Network'

Open Strategy invites developers to use Yahoo's huge scale, he added, "to write applications that build on our existing properties," such as Mail, Sports, Search, the front page, mobile, My Yahoo, and others. Yahoo-owned properties also include the photo-sharing site Flickr, the bookmarking site Del.icio.us, and the social-calendar site Upcoming.

Sample also noted that, with 500 million unique users spending 235 billion minutes each month on its sites, and with 10 billion relationships in buddy lists and Yahoo address books, the company has "a massive, latent social network." The new initiative, he added, will "bring it to the surface."

In other words, he told news media, Yahoo is not building another social network, but "building social into everything we do."

He described it as a "rewiring" of Yahoo by building structures that change how its pieces work together. He said developers will be able to take advantage of the "vitality" that will exist within this unified platform. An application written for a Yahoo property will be able to integrate with other properties and with the extended social network.

Example: Search Monkey

An example is Yahoo's Search Monkey, where developers can blend other data with search results so that, for instance, an Italian restaurant could have reviews and ratings along with the link to its Web site. Search Monkey officially launches in mid-May.

Charlene Li, an analyst with industry research firm Forrester, wrote on her blog that Yahoo's rewiring "is a significant step forward in the next phase of social networks and the social Web."

Social networks, she said, will at some point become "like air," with no boundaries between friends or work colleagues, regardless of where their personal network is based.

In March, Yahoo announced support for OpenSocial standards so that applications created by developers for Yahoo will also work on MySpace, Google and other sites accepting OpenSocial.

Li wrote that she does not see Open Strategy as a "Hail Mary pass" from Yahoo to counter Microsoft's efforts to acquire the company. She added that it's only a matter of time before Google, Facebook and other sites respond to the huge social environment and social driver that Yahoo can become.

"Open" has had a major emphasis by Yahoo recently. Earlier this month, for instance, it released an online advertising-management platform for businesses that includes an open set of application-programming interfaces, or APIs.

Also this month, Yahoo released a new version of its oneSearch technology for mobile devices, which it described as "an open technology platform."

Though it didn't win any licenses in the Federal Communications Commission's recent multi-billion-dollar spectrum auction, Google said it is pleased with the results -- and vows to continue pressing for greater network openness.

The comments come as the first from the online giant following the end of a federally mandated quiet period that now leaves participants in the FCC's 700MHz spectrum auction free to dish on the their bidding strategies and future plans.

For Google, (NASDAQ: GOOG) those plans involve working with regulators as the FCC decides how to address issues lingering in the wake of the largest spectrum sell-off in history.

"The end of the auction certainly doesn't mark the end of our efforts toward greater wireless choice and innovation," Richard Whitt, Google's Washington telecom and media counsel, and Joseph Farber, Google's corporate counsel, wrote yesterday in a company blog post.

While Verizon Wireless walked away the winning bidder in the spectrum's premium C Block, Google's participation proved instrumental. The company's bidding helped to trigger rules requiring the block's winner to open the network they create to all types of devices and applications.

Fiercely resisted by Verizon, the FCC's open-access requirements were a key victory for Google, which is working to build support for its Android mobile application platform through the Open Handset Alliance.

While Google remained tight-lipped on its intentions heading into the auction, many observers believed the company's motivations were less about spending billions on licenses to build a nationwide wireless network, and more about forcing open access.

Whitt and Farber this week confirmed those suspicions.

"Google's top priority heading into the auction was to make sure that bidding on the so-called 'C Block' reached the $4.6 billion reserve price that would trigger the important 'open applications' and 'open handsets' license conditions," they wrote.

To ensure C Block bidding hit the necessarily price, Google raised its bid in 10 rounds of the auction even when it was faced no opposing bidders, Whit and Farber wrote.

They added that Google had been prepared to shell out for the licenses in the event that no one topped its bids.

The open-access game

As it begins the next phase of its network build-out, all eyes now will be on Verizon to ensure that the wireless provider adheres to the openness provisions stipulated in the auction's rules.

Speaking earlier this week at the CTIA Wireless 2008 conference in Las Vegas, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said he would recommend that his fellow commissioners reject a petition to regulate open access. The petition had been submitted by Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (define) provider Skype.

Martin said the incumbent carriers had signaled that they were moving toward openness on their own accord, so adding new regulations would be unnecessary.
