Google Sites now in 38 languages

In May we opened up Google Sites, and while the service itself was only in English, it has always supported the ability to add website content in any language. It's been really exciting to see more than one million sites created in a wide range of countries and languages, for everything from an Italian improv theater group to a Spanish guide to Huitzuco to a Japanese computer store. With the addition of 37 more languages, it is now even easier for people and businesses around the world to build and host their own website on Google Sites.

The latest release includes full localized versions of the Google Sites service and interface, enabling website creators and collaborators to interact more naturally with the product in their native languages. Browser settings are used to automatically detect and display the preferred language among those supported. You can also override the browser language and set your language preference directly in Google Sites.

Here are the 38 languages we are supporting with this release: Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, English (UK), Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.

Google News now available on your iPhone and iPod Touch

As we sat in our offices in Trondheim staring off at the fjord -- we're Norwegians, that's what we do -- a thought occurred to us: wouldn't it be nice to make Google News accessible to readers on their iPod Touch or iPhone? The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, we're happy to announce that Google News is now available to iPhone and iPod Touch users in over 30 countries. This means that you'll see a full-fledged version of Google News on these devices, improved Google News results and, where available, relevant YouTube videos embedded with news stories.

There are a few ways to get to Google News using your iPhone or iPod Touch:
  • Go to www.google.com, click on the "more" tab and follow the link to Google News
  • Go to www.google.com and do a search, then click on the News link at the top of the screen
  • Go directly to Google News at http://news.google.com in your browser
We hope you enjoy this new feature. We haven't been able to take our eyes off it yet, not even to look at the fjord!

Developers, start your engines

We just launched a preview release of Google App Engine, a way for developers to run their web applications on Google's infrastructure. In the same way that Blogger made it easy to create a blog, Google App Engine is designed from the ground up to make it easy to create and run web applications.

With Google App Engine, developers can write web applications based on the same building blocks that Google uses, like GFS and Bigtable. Google App Engine packages those building blocks and provides access to scalable infrastructure that we hope will make it easier for developers to scale their applications automatically as they grow. This means they can spend less time dealing with system administration and maintenance, and more time building and improving their applications. (There's more detail on the new App Engine Blog.)

Google App Engine is free to use during the preview release, but the amount of computing resources any app can use is limited. In the future, developers will be able to purchase additional computing resources as needed, but Google App Engine will always be free to get started.

Today's launch is a preview release. We've got a lot left to do, and there are a lot of features we still want to add to the system. What we'd really like is to get your feedback on it, so we know which features are most important to you. We'll use your suggestions to keep improving the system.

This preview of Google App Engine is available for the first 10,000 developers who sign up; we will increase that number in near future. So, developers, please sign up, download the SDK, and start your engines.

How to Build a Successful Website - Recommendations from Google Guy

In a post on the 'Webmaster World' Forum, an ex-employee of Google, also known as Google Guy, provided the golden rules of creating a high trafficked website. The post, "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone" is truly priceless and I personally thank anyone who gives their time offering us all such treasured knowledge.

In this post, Google Guy covers 26 separate points which he feels to be important in the world of Google. Here, I shall pick out some of the points which I feel to be the most significant and easily applied:

1. Four of the 26 pointers by Google Guy speak of adding content.

Add, add, add. Google loves it, and your visitors will love it. Assure it is quality content though. You are looking for quality over quantity here.Sure, you can turn out 5 mediocre articles in the time it takes to write one excellent article. However, once that excellent article is on your site, people will bookmark your page and recommend you to friends and online contacts.

2. Your website should be clean and simple.

The simpler the HTML that you have on your website, the more the search engines will like you. Also, the more simply your visitors can navigate and read your site, the more THEY will like you.How simple is the layout of Google itself? Yes, very simple. How popular is it? Very.

3. Keep your pages small.

Aim for between 5K and 10K. Many of your visitors will still be using dial-up connections. Don't alienate these visitors by building pages that load slowly.

4. Keep your content pages to no more than 500 words, generally speaking.

If it gets longer, that's fine. Assure, however, that it is not rambling, that it NEEDS to be longer. If you can make it shorter, do so.

5. Use your keyword in the following ways.

Once in the title, once in the description tag, once in the heading, once in the url, once in bold, once in italic and once high on the page. Don't aim for misspelled keywords. The search engines are getting smarter and now often correct spelling mistakes as people search for them.

6. On each page, link to one or two highly ranked websites which relate to your industry.

Assure that the links are in context with the rest of the article. Use your keyword in the link.

7. Create links from one page to another within your website.

In this way, you even-out the entire PR of your website, as opposed to having one page which ranks very highly and other pages which don't. So, for example, if when writing one article, you mention a point which is covered in more detail in another article, link to that article. Use the keyword for the other article in the link.

8. Make your navigation system usable; both for visitors and search engine spiders.

For your visitors, assure that it is a simple and clean system. For the search engine spiders, assure that your links go no more than 3 links deep. This means that no page should be any more than one other page from the home page. Cross link from articles as much as possible.

9. Submit your website to as many directories as possible.

Here you will find an extensive list of available directories - "Strongest Links" Many are free. If you can afford it, pay the extra cash to have your site listed in Yahoo and Looksmart.

10. Request link swaps from related website.

Better yet, join a quality link exchange program. I use the "Link Exchange program" supplied for free by SiteSell.com, with whom I host my other website, "Barcelona Explore"

11. Write good, concise content.

Keep paragraphs short and to the point.

12. If you are using your website to promote your off-line business, don't just put up an online flyer.

Provide your visitors with information that they can use, not just information about you and your company. Unless they are specifically looking for information about you, they will click away from your site.

13. Study the information provided by your website statistics.

If your web host doesn't provide a good statistic program, use a free one like "StatCounter". Analyze the keywords that people have been using to find your site. If any surprising ones come up, use them in your site.

14. Partake in forums pertaining to your website.

Absorb all the information that is on there, and more importantly, become part of it. The networking with other people in your sector is invaluable and will prove it's worth by increasing backlinks, viral networking and recommendations.

These points are what I have taken as being the most important recommendations from Google Guy. The entire post is to be found here - "Webmaster World Forum - How to create a successful website".

Following all these points will speed up your success. Success at any speed, however, is a guarantee if you focus on offering your visitors value, by providing excellent content.

AdSense for video now in beta

In a very short time, watching videos online has become a common pastime, and the imagination of artists and other content owners continues to fuel this trend. Meanwhile, across the industry, advertisers and video publishers continue to look for the best solution that balances the needs of video fans with the need for video sites to generate the revenue that enables them to continue to be creative as they grow.

Enter, stage left: the AdSense for video beta. This approach takes the same non-intrusive InVideo ad format used on YouTube and extends it across video partner sites on the Google Content Network. This enables advertisers to run a single campaign across the largest network of online video content.

Unique to AdSense for video are text overlay ads contextually targeted to a combination of signals in your videos and on your site. With these overlay ads, the user's experience is not interrupted; users determine how much they want to interact with the ad.

We have two major goals: to make it easier for publishers to monetize video online, and for advertisers to learn how to reach the video community. Towards these ends, today we're also launching a single destination with an overview of various options to expand online video opportunities called Google Video Advertising Solutions. We hope this will be your starting point to understand how to leverage the Google Content Network and YouTube to make the most out of the online video experience. You can also see our overview videos for advertisers and publishers -- because isn’t video the best way to experience video?

We've been working with a number of video partners (e.g. popular destinations like BobVila.com, eHow, MyDamnChannel, ExpertVillage, PinkBike, TheNewsRoom, and social video aggregators like Revver, blip.tv, and GodTube). And we're also working with several key video platform solution solutions like Brightcove, Yume, Tremor Media, and Eyespot Network, who have plugged our ads into their platforms.

There are some criteria that publishers have to meet to participate in AdSense for video, which you can learn about on the Inside AdSense blog.

In search of the meaning of Googleism

The World Wide Web has brought a new level of enlightenment to modern society - thanks in part to the ubiquitous search engine Google. Whether you're talking rubbish at a dinner party or merely sitting around on Friday afternoon with too much idle time on your hands, the Net can open new avenues of knowledge and insight with just a few keystrokes and mouse-clicks.

This all-knowing omipresence has seen the emergence of "Googleism". But like any great human movement, the concept is splitting into different factions Did you mean Googlism?. A colleague recently forwarded me some links on this topic and as I relaxed for a few moments from my recent labours on Opera II and Excel, I thought I would look into the subject in more depth. John Stokdyk reports

Some enthusiasts have embraced Google to such an extent that they have founded the Church of Google, where they explain: "We reject supernatural gods on the notion they are not scientifically provable. Thus, Googlists believe Google should rightfully be given the title of "God", as She exhibits a great many of the characteristics traditionally associated with such Deities in a scientifically provable manner."

These assertions are supported by nine proofs, including a comparison on Google trends of the search volumes for "Google", which outscores "God", "Jesus", "Allah", "Buddha", "Christianity", "Islam", "Buddhism" and "Judaism" combined.

"God is thought to be an entity in which we mortals can turn to when in a time of need. Google clearly fulfils this to a much larger degree than traditional "gods", concludes the church, which celebrates Google Appreciation Day 14 of September, the date on which the domain Google.com was first registered.

The elevation of Google to a quasi-religion does not amuse everyone, so the church helpfully posts a collection of complaint emails. "If," writes Graham, "the God of the bible is real, then you are really looking for trouble, and I pray that you will be saved so that your eternity is not one of torment and suffering, and that God be glorified through your conversion."

A rival and less controversial site, Googlism.com, is more straightforward in its homage to the great search engine. The site was created as a "fun tool to see what Google 'thinks' of certain topics and people" and trawls search results to present a summary profile of the victim. A search on "AccountingWEB", for example, reveals:

  • AccountingWEB is the oldest and most successful online community of accountants
  • AccountingWEB is the winner of the New Media Age 2001 "best media business website" award
  • AccountingWEB is well aware of the affinity of our members for Excel and other MS Office applications.
  • But, lo! There is yet another strand of Googleism, one propounded in part by Swedish search optimisation nerd Nikke Lindqvist, to reflect what he and many other webmasters spend so much of their time thinking about - how their sites are ranked on Google and other search engines.

This is a good site to visit if you have any passing interest in search engine optimisation, as it focuses with theological intensity on efforts to deal with the original "Google bomb" in which the search string "miserable failure" brings up George W Bush's CV as the top result. Another thread notes the increasing sensitivity of Google's brand managers to protect the trademark by trying to force other sites to remove definitions of the verb to "google" as a term for internet searching.

One link leads to an email from a Google trademark lawyer who explains: "Our brand is very important to us, and as I'm sure you'll understand, we want to make sure that when people use "Google," they are referring to the services ourcompany provides and not to internet searching in general."

Should you want to take this further, you know where go next... Hours of pointless trivia-hunting are guaranteed.

Google India Women in Engineering Award 2008

Diversity at Google means having a workforce that reflects the diversity of our customers' perspectives, ideas and cultures -- one that thinks and acts inclusively, and fundamentally values people's similarities and differences. As part of our ongoing commitment to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, the India team has taken our first steps: in December we launched the Google India "Women in Engineering Award" to recognize women in the field of computer science and engineering.

In its inception year, we have extended this award to recognized engineering schools across India; it is open to any woman student in computer science engineering who meets the application criteria. This initiative has been received positively, as has been indicated by the inundating queries and subsequent applications. The last date for applying is January 31st and we are looking forward to hearing from even more applicants.

After our panel reviews all applications, the winners will be announced in a little more than a month, on February 29th. The winners will be invited to visit the Google engineering office in Bangalore during first week of March for a conclave comprising of keynotes, panel discussions, tech talks, breakouts and an award ceremony.

We hope this award will encourage students to take up computer science engineering as their study, and perhaps inspire some of you to take this up as a career too.

Google Announces Launch of Google Maps for Mobile With "My Location" Technology

Google today announced the release of version 2.0 of Google Maps for mobile, its innovative and widely used mobile mapping and local search application. New in v2.0 is a beta version of Google's "My Location" technology, which uses cell tower ID information to provide users with their approximate location, helping them determine where they are, what's around them, and how to get there.

Google is committed to providing users with quick and easy access to the information they need, no matter when or where they need it. Location information makes mobile mapping and search faster and more convenient, but the most common source of location information to date -- GPS technology -- is supported on fewer than 15 percent of the mobile phones expected to be sold in 2007. With Google's new My Location technology, users who don't have GPS-enabled mobile phones will now be able to take advantage of the added speed and convenience afforded by location information. The My Location technology also complements GPS-enabled devices, as it delivers a location estimate faster than GPS, provides coverage inside buildings (where GPS signals can be unreliable), and doesn't drain phone batteries as quickly as GPS. Whether users are trying to locate a restaurant in an unfamiliar neighborhood, get directions to the nearest hotel while traveling, or just find a place to grab some coffee while shopping for the holidays, Google Maps for mobile with My Location can help them get what they need quickly and easily.

The My Location technology takes information broadcast from cell towers and sifts it through Google-developed algorithms to approximate a user's current location on the map. This approximation is anonymous, as Google does not gather any personally identifiable information or associate any location data with personally identifiable information as part of the My Location feature. The feature can also be easily disabled by anyone who prefers not to use it. The My Location technology is available on most smartphones, including all color BlackBerry devices, all Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition devices, most Windows Mobile devices, newer Sony Ericsson devices, and some Motorola devices.

Google Maps for mobile, first launched in the US in November 2005, enables users to view interactive maps and satellite imagery, find local businesses, get point-to-point driving directions, and view live traffic updates, all while on the go. The application is now available on and optimized for a wide variety of platforms, running on most J2ME-enabled devices; all color BlackBery devices; Windows Mobile devices with Windows Mobile 2003, 5.0, and above; Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition devices; and Palm devices with Palm OS 5 and above. Google Maps for mobile is being actively used by millions of people in more than 20 different countries around the globe.

    Google Making Public Records Available

Google recently announced that they will soon be helping state governments make public records easily accessible to Internet users. The company has partnered with Arizona, California, and Virginia to remove technical barriers that had prevented search engines from accessing public records pertaining to education, real estate, health care and the environment.

These newly available records will not be exclusive to the search engines owned by Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. Officials from states partnering with Google have expressed hope that this initiative will make it easier for average citizens to navigate agency Web sites.

Currently, government computer systems aren’t programmed in a way that allows commercial search engines to access their databases. Google plans to fix this problem by creating virtual roadmaps which will allow search engines to find the databases that store public records. They’ve been working on this technology for approximately six months according to the AP.

Many privacy advocates are concerned about this movement due to the personal and confidential nature of the documents that will soon become available so widely. It’s been pointed out that Google is embroiled in controversy surrounding privacy issues at this time. The EPIC recently filed complaint with the Federal Trade Commission calling for an investigation of Google’s practice of tracking Internet search users who access government date in order to target ads at them. The publication of personal social security numbers is also a major concern of some.

    Google's new position 6 penalty

A discussion in an online webmaster forum indicates that Google might have invented a new ranking penalty for websites that rank well for popular search terms.

    What has happened?

During the last few weeks, some webmasters noticed that some of their long term position 1 or position 2 rankings in Google suddenly ranked at position 6.

The problem affected well established websites with a long history. The dropped web pages had long time rankings for popular search terms, usually on position 1.

    Why has Google done this?

It is not exactly clear yet which factors cause that ranking drop in Google's results. There are two theories:

    1. Google now considers usage data when calculating the rankings.
    2. Google now has a better understanding of word and phrase relationships.

If different usage data is the reason for the change then web pages with a higher click-through rate would get higher positions. However, some webmasters reported that even web pages with high click through rates have been downranked.

The penalty also seems to affect web pages that are listed with an appealing title and a description that is very relevant to the search term so it might be that the click-rate is not taken into account.

Google penaltyWe think that it's more likely that the word and phrase relationships are the reason for the ranking drops. It seems that web pages with too many inbound links using exactly the searched keyword as the anchor text were affected by the filter.

If the link to a special web page always uses exactly the same anchor text then the word variety is probably extremely low compared to the competing websites in the top results. That indicates a manipulation of the anchor texts and Google applies the filter.

What can you do to avoid that filter?

When you build links to your website, make sure that you use different but related keywords for the links to your site. If you overuse the same link text, Google might discover a manipulation.

If you use different but related keywords, then ranking algorithms will consider your web page relevant to a special topic. Use IBP's inbound link analyzer to get further information about the inbound link structure that leads to top 10 rankings.

    Google Checkout Adds Trends

Google is now revealing some seriously important market data via its Google Trends service. Whereas before, Google Trends just revealed search volume, trends that while certainly of interest did not necessarily reflect anything beyond a measure of the internet popularity of a term we now have Google Checkout Trends.

The new Checkout Trends service does reveal important information, namely, the sales data of merchants in Google’s Checkout sales network. This data is extremely valuable and usually hard to come buy; often researchers have to pay firms like the NPD Group a lot of money to know how well their competitors are doing in retail stores; but Google is giving away all the information for free.

Sure, Google Checkout represents only a subset of the entire marketplace, not including any brick-and-mortar stores, as well as thousands of major internet retailers (like Amazon.com, or the websites of Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy), but Google’s data certainly has significant value for market trend research.

Data goes back to July 2006, and does not reveal actual revenue, but rather revenue trends as measured on an unspecified scale. Items can be filtered by price, and multiple products can be compared against each other.

Also worth noting: Google Checkout will finally start charging for all those credit card transactions it’s been making on February 1, 2008, after 13 months of giving the store away. Will Checkout finally start making money (or at least losing less of it), or will merchants stop using it, now that Google isn’t paying them anymore to keep the service?

    Google Knol: Encyclopedia, Not Wikipedia

Expanding on our coverage of Google's Knol encyclopedia, there arises a critical but subtle difference between Knol and its most immediately recognizable sibling, Wikipedia:

In contrast to Wikipedia's contribution system, which is overseen and moderated by anonymous committee, Knol's articles will not be continuously editable. In theory, Wikipedia's model should have been superior, allowing information to be continuously updated and accurized; however, as anyone who's ever spent much time browsing Wikipedia can attest, the theory often fails when put into practice.

Knol's model of data collection fits with the more traditional, more professional and more authoritative model, where the data is collected from expert sources, fact-checked and verified. Rather than being the end of Wikipedia, however, Knol may very well improve and reinforce the accuracy and verity of Wikipedia's articles by providing easily found, higher quality source and reference material.

Another crucial difference for Knol is that its contributors will not be anonymous -- authors will be bylined as well as compensated from a share of ad revenue. This compels authors to compete to have their work featured on Knol, and this competition should further ensure that articles of the highest quality will appear there.

Link bait in search engine optimization

The quantity and quality of inbound links are two of the many metrics used by a search engine ranking algorithm to rank a website. Link bait creation falls under the task of link building, and aims to increase the quantity of high-quality, relevant links to a website. Part of successful linkbaiting is devising a mini-PR campaign around the release of a link bait article so that bloggers and social media users are made aware and can help promote the piece in tandem. Social media traffic can generate a substantial amount of links to a single web page. Sustainable link bait is rooted in quality content.

    Types of link bait

Although there are no clear-cut subdivisions within link bait, many attempt to divide them into types of hooks. This is a short list of some of the most common approaches with brief descriptions:

    • Informational Hooks - Provide information that a reader may find very useful. Some rare tips and tricks or any personal experience through which readers can benefit.
    • News Hooks - Provide fresh information and garner citations and links as the news spreads.
    • Humor Hooks - Tell a funny story or a joke. A bizarre picture of your subject or mocking cartoons can also prove to be a link bait.
    • Evil Hooks - Saying something unpopular or mean may also yield a lot of attention. Writing about something that is not appealing about a product or a popular blogger. Provide strong reasons for it.
    • Tool Hooks - Create some sort of tool that is useful enough that people link to it.
    Examples of linkbait

For example, Fetch Softworks has just announced their Take Fetch Back to School, Win a MacBook Contest (4 runners-up win new iPod Nanos). This contest should be great linkbait because it is geared to students, staff and faculty just beginning the academic year; offers great prizes; and is happening at a time when some of those prizes, the new iPods, are making a lot of news. As a user of their product I've already started pondering what to write, and as a blogger I've already linked to them. So I think it's working!

    When to use linkbait?

Like your birthday present, linkbait is for special occasions, meant to add to your content rather than replace it. The bait is only part of the overall mix. If you tried to use linkbait in every blog post you would soon end up with a site lacking in continuity. That wouldn't really serve your goals. But on occasion, if you come up with a clever idea that is related to your goals, adds value to your regular content, and attracts attention, then go for it. Strategic bits of linkbait can help you expand your readership, acquire more incoming links and raise your rankings while adding a bit of excitement for your regular readers.

I could proceed to bore you with more details, caveats, pros and cons, but plenty of others have already written on the topic. If you are considering adding linkbait to your marketing toolkit, the following resources should give you much of what you need to know.

SEO Training & Website Optimization Steps

For an advertising agency to employ staff and train them on website design search engine optimisation, you can imagine the task to advise the account mangers on all aspects of online media solutions. Most advertising companies that deal with internet marketing promotions train their staff to know mainly about banner advertising. Any form of banner advertising is real easy pitch to learn. The employee just needs to be aware that it is one banner, one placement and it appears on a search engine.

SEO is a vast and rapid growing market in this day and age.

SEO training takes time and patience as there is so much to know and learn about that at first seems pretty daunting. Any advertising company that do SEO training will know that the employee will have to need to be aware of banner advertising in all shapes and sizes, cost per click advertising, cost per acquisition advertising, pay per lead advertising and the list goes on for your internet marketing strategy.
Before anyone wants to attempt SEO training be prepared for a long windy road as you integrate the knowledge of website design, keyword analysis and density checks, together with time taken for the actual SEO advertising campaign to have a good impact on your website. SEO training requires the employee to explain to potential customers the reason why SEO is the way to go for their online media solutions.

    SEO Training - Website Design

When doing SEO training Weblinx let their account managers be aware of what a website design requires to be effectively picked up by search engine spiders not the web design itself. SEO training makes the account managers aware of page layout, internal and backward linking strategy and the text that is required on the web page for effective Google SEO.

SEO Training - Internal and External Linking

Another important factor of search engine optimisation we take into account in SEO training is the use of a proper internal and external; backward linking strategy of the website.
An internal linking structure is how you can guide a search engine spider around the site easily and effectively. The most common form is the use of text navigation menus or links on each page of the website. These are extremely beneficial to your search engine promotion campaign, as a search engine spider can easily navigate around the site and access all the other pages on the site rather than just coming into the one page and being stuck on it and then leaving your website.
The external or backward linking also needs to be put in place or implemented as it can improve the way in which a search engine would position or rank the site.
The more relevant external links you have in place going to the relevant sections of your website the more beneficial it is to your website promotion as a whole. This is because search engine spiders can easily come to your site from various locations and visit the site and view the content more often.
We go through how linking for external and internal links should be put in place during our SEO training sessions for your most effective online media solution.

    SEO Training Cost Per Click

With SEO training CPC our account managers are trained to let you know that we are an internet marketing company who design at least fifty new pages for your website. It will be these pages that get found in the listings on Google delivering potential buyers to your website. When a costumer searches for the keywords you have secured with us it will be the page optimised by Weblinx.biz that they click on to enter your website. Weblinx.biz SEO Training lets the account managers know that you pay on a thirty day invoice only when you have agreed to the charge on the invoice and sign it then fax the invoice back to us. Our SEO training covers the use of a stat counter to monitor your clicks and keep in communication with you throughout the campaign. SEO training also covers the fact that Weblinx.biz need your campaign to be successful if we are to cover our costs so we keep optimising the pages when appropriate to deliver a profitable website design search engine promotion.
More info on SEO cost per click

SEO Training Pay On Page Placement

SEO training pay on page placement covers the fact the customer only pays when the website pages that Weblinx.biz design, reach within the agreed search engine positions (top twenty and top ten) on Google. There is a charge for the top twenty placement and the top ten position. SEO training covers the value of advertising on Google for just one keyword. How much are you willing to pay to have your website appear in the search engine rankings on the search engine Google? All prices for gaining search engine ranking will be agreed to at the onset of your website design search engine optimisation campaign. All of these aspects are covered in our SEO training sessions.

    Best SEO Tips

Below is an easy to follow SEO training steps compiled by professional search engine optimisers to assist the businesses with their search engine optimisation and to help you understand how to implement the changes to your website that are required for successful SEO on the major search engines. The following may be considered as SEO secrets for onsite SEO optimization but in order to deliver a successful SEO campaign on the search engines you require external resources to compliment onsite SEO. The steps below are guidelines and a lot more is required but they are the fundamentals in preparing your website to have the right tools to compete in the front pages using basic SEO techniques.

    SEO - Process

    SEO - Descriptions

    SEO Significance

    SEO 1 - Keyword Analysis

The first step of any website optimization for SEO is to define which keywords or search terms you would like to be found under. The keywords selection is usually defined by the client; along with suggestion from your Weblinx account manager. Keyword sources generally tend to include search tools such as Google Suggest, overture and keywords related to the website/business the client is involved in - other keywords will generally be defined by client recommendations. This is because in all likeliness clients generally tend to already have an idea what they need to target for the SEO campaign.

Keyword selection is imperative for SEO and can often decide how effective your website can be. If the right keywords are targeted you would expect to see a much better return of click and enquiries as opposed to 'less relative' phrases for your SEO.

    SEO 2 - Keyword grouping

Keyword grouping involves an analysis into the keywords which have been agreed by client and Weblinx for the SEO package. This SEO process is to define which keywords are to be targeted on certain pages. An old method many SEO's use is to create a new page targeted for each keyword. Due to Google algorithm changes a more efficient way we feel is to group 'like/related' keywords together and target these phrases across one optimized page. This reduces the risk of content repetition across the site which can have the effect of holding the site back from obtaining its anticipated search engine ranking for the SEO

It is important to target key phrases on website pages which are relevant for successful SEO online. For example if a keyword 'cars' was optimized on a page related to 'walking' the likeliness of an increase in enquiries would realistically be small thus the SEO campaign will be unsuccessful.

To ensure your site is in the right state for optimization is to ensure the page is laid out correctly containing the tags which Google search spiders look out for

    SEO 5 - Internal Linking

Internal linking is the SEO process of ensuring the site has a strong linking structure internally. This ensures Google spiders stay in the website longer and can easily navigate around the site to the pages you want to focus on for the SEO campaign

Linking can play an essential part in SEO. The bulk of optimization for SEO is done mostly on-site and internal linking via keyword anchor text links.

    SEO 6 - External Linking

External linking is the process of ensuring the site has a strong linking structure externally (often referred to as backward links). The process is to generate links to the website from sites in a clean cache on Google. This is what is known as quality linking

External linking (provided the internal on site optimization is done correctly) hugely compliments work done to a website for SEO. It is through external linking and on site optimization that best results are achieved for SEO

    SEO for Yahoo

Yahoo! is the second most popular from the three major search engines and includes an enormous network of websites. The algorithm of Yahoo itself can pose a problem for some SEO's as we optimize client websites to rank highly on multiple search engines due to the way that it differs from Google and MSN. That said, any issue can be addressed provided that the right attention is given to the right details.

There are some guidelines or techniques which are helpful to get higher ranking in Yahoo. On Yahoo! the major areas are as follows:

    • Keyword density
    • Site structure
    • Backlinks

    Keyword Density

Keyword Density is the most important factor that yahoo cosider while ranking websites. Generally you will see a range that appears much higher is 5.0 to 8.0%. Beyond this range or crossing this range your ranking in yahoo will go down on regular basis and after certain time your website will be removed from Yahoo's index.

    Site structure

Site Structure is more important factor on Yahoo! for two key reasons. First, the site structure determines the order in which your page content gets seen by the search engines and thus, which content will be given the highest priority. Content that occurs higher up in the code of your page is given a higher weight than content lower down in the code. Second, a properly structured site will be lower in code through the use of CSS, reduced or eliminated table use, etc. The reduction in code will push the content higher up the page as far as a search engine is concerned and thus, it will be given more weight.

    Backlinks

Like in the other major search engines, having a solid backlink count from relevant sites using good anchor text practices is a major factor on Yahoo! for any reasonably competitive phrase. When it comes to calculating backlinks Yahoo! is far more similar to Google than MSN.

    SEO for MSN

Like all of the major search engines, MSN also builds their index of sites using spiders to crawl the web finding new and changed information. This information is then processed by the MSN servers using complex algorithms to determine which sites are most relevant to the search query entered. All search engine algorithms are mathematical and thus, there is a fixed set of rules and factors which, if addressed correctly, will result in a high ranking.

Factors to be considered while optimizing for MSN:

    • Page Content
    • Linking Structure
    • Number of pages
    • Title, Meta & head Tags

The above factors if addressed correctly, will have very significant results on your rankings.

    Page Content:

The content of your page must be perfect. What I mean by this is that the content must appeal to both the search engines and the algorithms. In order to write properly for the visitors you must be able to write clearly and in language that is both appealing and understandable to your target market.

    Internal Linking Structure:

The way your pages link together tells the search engines what the page is about and also allows them to easily (or not-so-easily) work their way to your internal pages. If your site has an image or script-based navigation it is important to also use text links either in your content, in a footer, or both. The text links are easy to follow for a spider and perhaps more importantly, the text links allow you the opportunity to tell the spiders what a specific page is about though the anchor text and, in the case of footers, allows you to add in more instances of the targeted phrases outside of your general content area.

The Number Of Pages & Their Relevancy:

MSN wants to please their visitors. For this reason they want to insure that highest likelihood that a searcher will find what they need once they get to your site. For this reason a larger site with unified content will rank higher that a smaller site or a site with varying content topics. (note: this assumes that all else is equal in regards to the other ranking factors)

When you are optimizing your site for MSN be sure to take some time to built quality content. Do a search on your major competitors to see how large their sites are, over time you will want to build yours to the same range through general content creation or the addition of a blog or forum to your site.

Titles, Heading Tags & Special Formats:

Titles are the single most important piece of code our your entire web page for two reasons. The first is that it holds a very high level of weight in the algorithm. the second reason is that it is your window to the world. When someone runs a search the results will generally show your page title in the search results. This means that a human visitor has to be drawn to click on your title or rankings your site is a futile effort (this isn't about bragging rights, it's about return on investment).

Heading tags are used to specify significant portions of content. The most commonly used is the H1 tag though there are obviously others (or they wouldn't bother numbering them would they). The H1 tag is given a significant amount of weight in the algorithm provided that it is not abused though overuse (it should only be used once per page). Try to keep your headings short-and-sweet. They're there to tell your visitor what the page is about, not your whole site.

Google Takes StarOffice For Its Pack

Google is adding Sun Microsystems' StarOffice suite to Google Pack, its freely downloadable collection of productivity software. The software is available immediately.

Google Pack is quite a collection that includes Google Earth, Norton Security Scan, Google Desktop, Firefox with Google Toolbar, Adobe Reader, Skype, RealPlayer and other Google products.

StarOffice is Sun's commercial version of OpenOffice, the open source office suite that is available from Sun for $69. The $69 fee gets you product and technical support from Sun along with indemnification from any legal action.

"That's really what you're paying for," Mark Herring, senior director of marketing for Sun, told Internetnews.com. "If you couldn't care less about support, then Google has a distribution for you."

He added StarOffice also has a few extra features OpenOffice does not have, like an extra spell checker, Web search and some conversion filters. Both support Open Document Format (ODF) and can read Microsoft Office documents.

Rob Helm, director of research for Directions on Microsoft, thinks this is more of an effort to get the low-hanging fruit than a real effort to take a chunk out of Microsoft's bread-and-butter Office business.

"Google has been competing with Microsoft at the low end of Office for some time, so this is a further expansion of Google's strategy," he told internetnews.com. He said StarOffice has some shortcomings and is not a worthy replacement for Office in a business/enterprise market, but it's perfect for users with fewer demands.

"I'd say [StarOffice] is not so much a competitor to Office today as Works, the free software a lot of people get with their PCs," said Helm. "Of course, they would love to sneak into the enterprise market, but considering the functionality StarOffice is offering, I don't think most enterprises would look at it seriously."

Mostly, he sees StarOffice as a way for Google to get into the desktop, and perhaps extend its Web-based application offerings, Docs and Spreadsheets, or perhaps create some connection between StarOffice and the online applications.

Google is Being Hacked Using this Technique

According to a fascinating release from search marketer Dan Thies, Google has been aware over a year now (that he knows of) of a method to destroy a website's ranking. The method is called proxy hacking.

    What is a Web Proxy?
First, it is important to understand that in their simplest form proxies are servers that act as a relay for Internet requests. Web proxies are often used to allow people to surf the net anonymously by forwarding their requests for content and then delivering the content to the users. This is similar to sending mail to a person through the post office except that in this case there is no return address or any identifying information. For a more detailed explanation here is Wikipedia's definition.

Here is essentially how this Google hack works:

    1. All is well; your website is www.xyzname.com and it is currently listed in the top 10 in Google for 'xyz'.

    2. A hacker comes along and decides that your listing for 'xyz' needs to be removed (perhaps for competitive reasons or out of spite). So the hacker gets Google to spider your website through a proxy. The address that Google would be given to index might look like this:
    www.proxysrus.au/proxy/www.xyzname.com/

    3. When Google indexes this new URL it looks legitimate and Google's filters will soon recognize that the content being indexed is exactly the same as www.xyzname.com. As a result, in the cases that have arisen so far www.xyzname.com loses its ranking and the freshly indexed proxy URL has effectively eradicated the competition.

So how is this hack technically accomplished?
Well I am with Dan Thies on this one, I have no interest at all in sharing the specifics because the last thing I want to do is enable more evil in the world. In addition, since I have never seen such a thing done I can only postulate how it would be accomplished. That said, I think it is reasonable to share the problems that would need to be surmounted to make such a thing work:

    1. When the proxy URL is requested the server would have to provide the search engines with zero suspicion that a proxy was delivering the information. This includes URL syntax, URL length, server header information and latency.

    2. The proxy URL would have to appear authoritative.

    3. The proxy would need to be able to thwart the proxy hacking prevention measures that Dan has laid out within his informative article. At this time it appears the only proxies that are having some success are the ones that strip all browsing information so that the 'hack proof' sites cannot tell whether the traffic is legitimate or not. If they can't tell then they will not know to block Google from spidering their site through the wrong URL. Again even that attack has been rebuffed by Dan and his team by enabling noindex and nofollow tags on his client's sites UNLESS a verified search engine is visiting.

Esther Dyson: If Google Is the New Microsoft, Facebook Is the New Google

Well known Silicon Valley start-up investor Esther Dyson appeared on Charlie Rose a few days ago to give her reading of the current tech space. It turns out that Dyson is actually more interested in space and biotech these days, but she did offer an interesting comment regarding the social media business. Asked if Facebook is the new Google, Dyson said, “[It is] if you think Google is the next Microsoft.” So, is Google the new Microsoft? Dyson said, “It could well be.” I’m one of Dyson’s biggest fans from way back, so I always find her insights valuable. But in this case, I think she got part of the equation right.

There is no doubt that Google is the new Microsoft. The company's global reach, revenue and cash war chest prove that to anyone paying attention. I also agree with Dyson that what Google really wants to do is make search so highly personalized that the company will be able to “predict” what you want to: find, buy, watch, etc. But due to privacy concerns, Google is waiting for smaller companies to normalize the idea of personalized search and let others bear the initial brunt of privacy concerns highlighted by special interest groups. Where Dyson, in my view, gets it wrong is with Facebook. As one of the Wired team accurately pointed out weeks ago, unless Facebook becomes truly open, it’s really just the latest hot online club until the next one comes along.

Possibly the strangest moment during her appearance came when Rose took the opportunity to tap into Dyson’s mind as a tech consultant and asked how he could use the Web to raise money for his show. Her answer, in short: Put a PayPal donate button on your website. And—bang!—just like that, Rose saved a $50k Web consultant fee.

    Google's AdSense to distribute videos

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Short Internet videos from the creator of the animated TV show 'Family Guy' and Raven-Symone, star of the Disney Channel show 'That's So Raven,' will be distributed over Google Inc.'s AdSense network, it was announced Thursday.

Media Rights Capital, the financing company that backed last year's film 'Babel,' is supporting the two projects. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The programs will appear in a video box that a user would click on to start. The box will be packaged with banner advertising and video ads that will appear either before or after the programming.

The videos will be distributed to numerous Web sites served by AdSense, which places targeted advertising across the Internet. AdSense signed a similar distribution deal last year with Viacom Inc.'s MTV Networks.

Media Rights Capital will work with Google to target Web sites most appropriate for its content, the company said.

'We feel this partnership answers the question of how best to reach viewers online, because the Web is fragmented into millions and millions of viewing destinations,' said Asif Satchu, co-chief executive of Media Rights Capital.

Seth MacFarlane, creator of 'Family Guy,' will produce short videos featuring new characters, while Raven-Symone will be in a 'how-to' show, the company said.

The company said the distribution deal was preferable to aggregating content on one site. Distributing content through AdSense means the videos reach a broader audience, which would include new sites as they pop up.
